Post WWII, the 1950s were a time of "dynamic conservatism," shown not only in the President's policies, but also in the culture of America. Hairstyles and makeup are not excluded from this, exemplified through the wide array of new hairstyles that gave women more choices to express themselves.
Hair
Lucille Ball popularized the "Poodle Cut," helping out women with naturally curly hair.
Pin Curls were popularized by Hollywood actresses such as Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, and Bridget Bardot.
Audrey Hepburn created the "pixie cut", with her boyish short hair and bangs.
The bouffant, another popular style, was worn by singer Connie Francis. It became especially popular with teen girls.
The ponytail and the beehive were also created during the 50s!
Many of these hairstyles are still popular today!
Makeup
Marilyn Monroe's make-up is the epitome of 1950's cosmetology. Everyone wanted the bold red lip and sultry cat-eyes. She really popularized these looks. Max Factor, her makeup artist, vowed to never release her makeup secrets, even after she died.
